In the summer of 2010, when Antonio Poli was asked what his dreams were, he responded: “To work with Muti, Barenboim, and Abbado.” One year later he had already achieved his goal and made his debut under Riccardo Muti at the Salzburg Festival. Ever since, this tenor from Viterbo, Italy, who was born in 1986, has been considered a shooting star, yet he has remained cautious about his career choices. “Mirella Freni once told me: ‘An artist makes a career with the word no, not yes,’” he observes. “You have to be very picky and develop your repertoire step by step.” For that reason he decided to turn down an invitation to sing Rodolfo in “La Bohème” at one of the major opera houses: “I’m only 25 and still want to first sing many of the bel canto roles: Bellini, Donizetti, also Mozart.” And yet it was without hesitation that he accepted LUCERNE FESTIVAL’s invitation to perform in a Debut series recital. After all, the art of the song remains the best school for any singer.
