Willy Burkhard (1900-1955)
“Das Jahr” (“The Year”), Op. 62
Willy Burkhard, one of the most formative Swiss composers of the 20th century, nowadays appears all too rarely on concert programs—all the more reason to take advantage of any chance to hear his music. Alois Koch will perform one of his major works, one which attests to his pantheistic credo. The oratorio “Das Jahr” (“The Year”), Op. 62, which Paul Sacher premiered exactly 70 years ago, portrays the eternal cycle of coming to be and passing away as exemplified in nature; in that sense the work represents a counterpart to Joseph Haydn’s “The Creation” and “The Seasons.” Composed at the beginning of the Second World War, it reflects a credo “in both its text and its music, but also in its sense of Swiss local color associated with mountain regions (“Reduit”), which the composer personally experienced during stays at health spas in Montana and Davos that were necessitated by illness,” explains Alois Koch. This credo is “naturalistic in a way conforming to the aesthetics of the time. The text closely adheres to the pathetic sensibility of the era, but the music is astonishingly autonomous and can be compared to the works of Arthur Honegger and Frank Martin.”
