Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
Mass in E-flat major, D 950
“The soul of mankind is like the water. It comes from heaven, it returns to heaven.” So begins Goethe’s famous “Song of the Spirits.” The ultimate questions—what should we believe, what can we hope for?—are as much a part of literature as they are of religious liturgy. In fact Schubert’s setting of the Goethe poem and his late-period Mass in E-flat address the same themes: humanity’s precarious existence, how we relate to the higher powers (are they inclined to mercy or harsh judgment?), finitude and eternity. Even the language here resorts to symbols of heaven and earth, water and spirit. In both cases Schubert composed music that is deeply personal and unique: confessions of an artist who was a doubter when it came to official Catholic dogma but nevertheless did not lose faith.
