“La clemenza di Tito,” K. 621
People are capable of remorse. It was from this conviction, which lies at the heart of Christian thinking, that the Enlightenment derived its faith in the power of reason. An ideal example of how the two are linked together is demonstrated by the opera seria “La clemenza di Tito” by Wolfgang Amadé Mozart, which was written in 1791 for the coronation of Emperor Leopold II in Prague: a tribute to the humanity of the wise ruler. Vitellia, who is being courted by Sesto, herself loves the emperor Tito. But the latter wants to marry Servilia, and the frustrated Vitellia, seeking revenge, plans an uprising. Meanwhile, Tito learns of Servilia’s love for Annio and thus forswears his own pursuit. He instead proposes to Vitellia, who then tries in vain to stop the conspiracy she has hatched. After narrowly escaping death, the emperor wins back his power but now must deal with the would-be assassins …
