LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA | Claudio Abbado conductor | Radu Lupu piano

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37

Anton Bruckner (1824-1896)
Symphony No. 1 in C minor, WAB 101

When Romanian pianist Radu Lupu and conductor Claudio Abbado make music, two like-minded souls join together. That’s what last summer’s LUCERNE FESTIVAL audience experienced in an astonishing program featuring the First Piano Concerto of Johannes Brahms. The performance by both artists highlighted its profound interiority rather than its brilliant virtuosity. “Abbado and Lupu eschewed external drama,” wrote the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung,” but instead “transformed the sound, even in the loudest passages, into something internal. This restraint gives the piece an even fiercer and edgier effect– like a concerto in spite of itself.” Lupu is a true poet of the piano who understands his relationship with the orchestra as a first among equals, while the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA, vice versa, comprises an ensemble made of soloists. Together they renew their insightful collaboration to perform the Third Piano Concerto of Beethoven.
