“Speakings”
Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951)
“Erwartung,” Op. 17
For Simon Rattle, he is “probably the most spiritual British composer”: Jonathan Harvey’s works are influenced by Christian, Theosophist, and Buddhist ideas. “Speakings,” which was premiered at the London Proms in 2008, takes up the issue of human language acquisition—and, with the help of the latest computer technology from IRCAM in Paris, literally makes the orchestra speak. Pierre Boulez combines Harvey’s pioneering score with Philippe Manoury’s large orchestral work “Sound and Fury” and Arnold Schoenberg’s rarely heard “Erwartung,” his first work for the stage, from 1909. This expressionist “record of an anxiety dream” traces the extreme states of feeling experienced by a young woman who wanders through a forest at night seeking her lover—only to find his slain corpse.
