Philippe Manoury’s “Strange Ritual,” an ensemble composition from 2005, is a quintessential representation of the calculated face-off between order and chaos, well-planned processes and random proliferation: “This work, in one movement, is at the origin a kind of ‘passacaglia’ of a real free form. The ‘motive’ heard at the beginning was to support the whole architecture of this piece. But while composing, I’ve inserted many foreign elements that, little by little, burst this basic structure. The title ‘Strange Ritual’ evokes this: a kind of regular and well-ordered process, comparable to a ritual, becomes jeopardized by the anarchistic behavior of certain elements which finally cause it to explode.”
