Namgyal Lhamo
Tibetan songs of faith
During the 1950s, the People’s Republic of China gradually asserted its claim to the Tibetan highlands, which were finally annexed outright. The Dalai Lama, the religious leader of Buddhism, had to leave the country in 1959 as a result. In their rebellion and battles with the People’s Liberation Army, tens of thousands lost their lives; and in the aftermath of the Cultural Revolution, most of the Tibetan monasteries and cultural monuments were destroyed. Together with the Dalai Lama, the family of musician Namgyal Lhamo also fled from their homeland to Dharamsala in India. There she studied at the Tibetan Institute for the Performing Arts—and since then has taken up the mission of researching, collecting, and making the traditional chants and songs of her homeland known around the world through performance. In Lucerne Namgyal Lhamo, who is also known as the “Tibetan nightingale,” will perform songs of faith, accompanying herself on such Tibetan string instruments as the draneyn (folk lute) and gumang.
