Sometimes it’s the old that sounds unusual and the new that strikes us as familiar. This is the paradox Italian master pianist Maurizio Pollini addresses in his series Pollini Perspectives, in which he juxtaposes the late piano sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven with contemporary works. For this third part of the cycle, he will delve into the musical soliloquies of Beethoven’s Sonata in A major, Op. 101, before taking on the mighty “Hammerklavier” Sonata. Meanwhile, Helmut Lachenmann further exemplifies the notion that one can never rest on one’s laurels but must begin anew, again and again. He set out to surpass what he had achieved with his first two string quartets in his third contribution to the genre, the “Grido” Quartet (“grido” being Italian for “cry” or “scream”): “What does Robinson Crusoe do if he believes his island to be developed? Should he heroically tear down what has been erected again? Should he leave his nest? He reveals himself and writes his Third String Quartet … for the appearance of self-complacency is deceptive. Pathways in art don’t lead anywhere and most certainly not to a ‘destination’….”
