Selected Lieder
The performance of art song, Thomas Quasthoff once lamented, is nowadays practically no longer taught at the conservatories. And as far as artist agencies and concert and festival programming are concerned, lieder recitals are at best niche events. Yet Quasthoff wasn’t content merely to bemoan this foat but took a courageous step to counter this decline by founding the Berlin-based competition “Das Lied,” which chooses the best young performers every two years. In 2011 Amira Elmadfa was the winner, and her victory included not just 30,000 Euros but the opportunity to appear in a Debut series concert in Lucerne. This 31-year-old German mezzo-soprano, who has Arabic roots, ws born in Lich in the German state of Hesse and grew up in Vienna, where she studied with Hilde Zadek. She immediately won over the jury, which along with Quasthoff consisted of Brigitte Fassbaender, Annette Dasch, and Eva Wagner-Pasquier: Could there be a better recommendation?
