Philippe Manoury has described his orchestral work “Abgrund” (“Abyss”) as the “chronicle of a fall.” Melodic lines and rhythmic textures gradually dissolve from harsh tone clusters, until “everything falls into a vortex. The pillars of chords falter, the sonic edifice collapses: ABYSS!” Likewise in Jacques Wildberger’s “Canto per orchestra,” we hear a song attempting to emerge, but at the end “a ‘rush of anxiety’ breaks the lines, causing them to sink bank into the preverbal.” In his “Transkompositionen,” on the other hand, Christoph Delz attempts not to overcome noise but to “translate” it into music. Completing this matinee program of the basel sinfonietta is a new work by Thomas Amann.
