“Vivaldi ritrovato”
In recent years, no other opera composer of the Baroque era has enjoyed the kind of Renaissance accorded to Antonio Vivaldi, the “red priest” from Venice. This resurgence of interest is due in no small part to Cecilia Bartoli’s advocacy. In 1999, in the Biblioteca Nazionale in Turin, the celebrated Italian mezzo-soprano tracked down a number of the composer’s stage works that had fallen into oblivion and then recorded excerpts from them on her multiple-award-winning “Vivaldi Album.” In fact her album broke sales records, generating figures usually associated only with popular music. Since then many of her colleagues have surfed along on the wave of her gigantic success, but now the champion herself returns to her favorite discovery to bring us her new program, “Vivaldi ritrovato,” with the excellent Ensemble I Barocchisti from Ticino at her side. Vivaldi, raves “La Bartoli,” is simply “fantastic music.” And who would argue with her there?
