Pierre Boulez (*1925)
“Pli selon pli. Portrait de Mallarmé” for soprano and orchestra
Without question, “Pli selon pli” ranks among Pierre Boulez’s major works. The composer took his title from a poem by the Symbolist Stéphane Mallarmé. In “Remémoration d’amis belges” (“Remembrance of Belgian Friends”) Mallarmé describes how the fog over the city of Bruges lifts “pli selon pli” (“fold by fold”) – a process that Boulez elevates to a formal principle. Throughout five movements he creates an ever more sharply detailed portrait of the poet. Boulez achieves this not through a conventional musical “setting” of Mallarmé’s verse but instead by translating the poetry into musical parameters. “A kind of ‘staging’ is what operates here: It puts the emphasis at times on direct articulation of the text, at times on the poetic world which this awakens. An intellectual theater, if you will, set in motion through the reading of the poem and the reverberation which it triggered internally.”
