The geometrical distinction between a point and an area might well describe the difference between Karlheinz Stockhausen’s “Punkte” and Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s “Photoptosis.” The former is a quasi-“atomistic” music that is structured through events whose rhythms, colors, and dynamics are precisely calculated. The latter represents a composition of sonic fields inspired by the monochromatic paintings of Yves Kleins, whose middle section is a virtuoso collage of varied styles, eras, and quotations. Pierre Boulez combines these two key works of the postwar years with two classics from the Second Viennese School, thereby demonstrating in a nutshell both the continuity and the stylistic diversity of the development of Austro-German music in the 20th century.
