Pierre Boulez has put together a purely French program for this year’s opening concert of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY. We’ll hear from four generations of composers, from Maurice Ravel to Marc-André Dalbavie. In fact this musical journey takes us even further back in time, for, amid the horrors of the First World War, Ravel’s “Tombeau de Couperin” pays homage to the French harpsichord players of the 18th century. The other works on the program further show that the musical language developed by French composers continues to maintain its independence to this day. For example, Olivier Messiaen’s “Chronochromie” makes a complex rhythmic system directly perceptible to the ear through its consistent use of varying timbres. In his “Concertante il suono,” Marc-André Dalbavie looks back to the baroque model of the concerto grosso, transforming it into a fascinating form of spatial music.
