Karlheinz Stockhausen ranks among the most uncompromising yet influential forces in contemporary music since 1945. Pierre Boulez has thus organized a program in homage to his contemporary, who died in 2007. It will offer an overview, from the pioneering work of his early creative phase to the beginning of his work on the opera cycle “Licht,” encompassing solo and orchestral pieces. The program includes such works from the 1950s as “Kreuzspiel” and the famous “Klavierstücke,” whose strict serial procedures typically caused scandals when they were premiered. Also to be heard are the electronic spatial composition “Gesang der Jünglinge” (after the “Book of Daniel”) and Stockhausen’s late orchestral adaptations of his “Zodiac” melodies, which harmonize beautifully with our festival theme of “Night.”
