Spain is the setting for this concert with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra: nocturnal Spain, to be more precise. Isaac Albéniz transports us to Seville and the port of Cádiz, while Manuel de Falla summons the magic of Alhambra’s gardens and their famous fountains through the symphonic impressions of “Nights in the Gardens of Spain.” In the second movement of his tone poem “Ibéria” (“Les parfums de la nuit”), Debussy evokes the seductive scents of a Spanish summer night. And in “Boléro” Maurice Ravel, who was born in the Basque region of France, deploys the basic rhythmic pattern of the Spanish dance of the same name. Yet against this repetitive percussive background a refined instrumental crescendo expands throughout the orchestra into a maelstrom of irresistible power. Music that sounds “Spanish” doesn’t necessarily have to come from Spain….
