Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951)
“Gurre-Lieder”, for soloists, chorus and orchestra
The premiere of “Gurrelieder” on February 23, 1913 gave Arnold Schoenberg the greatest success of his career. He had labored for almost eleven years on the gigantic score, which centers around a medieval story: the legendary love of the Danish King Waldemar for the beautiful Tove, a young maiden and commoner whom the jealous queen murders. Danish writer Jens Peter Jacobsen developed this mythic material—whose love triangle is reminiscent of the stories of Tristan and Isolde and Pelleas and Melisande—into a cycle of poems, thus providing a template for the composer. Schoenberg’s musical language here still partakes completely of a late-romantic aesthetic, with a delicately woven fabric of sound, but his score also calls for a monumental expansion of forces. Around 150 orchestral musicians and 200 chorus members are needed for performance—an ensemble more gigantic than what is found even in Wagner or Strauss. For that reason, the chance to hear “Gurrelieder” live is a rarity indeed!
