Anton Bruckner (1824-1896)
Symphony No. 8 in C minor, WAB 108 (version 1890, Nowak Edition)
“This Symphony is the creation of a giant: It towers above all the master’s other symphonies in its spiritual dimension, fertility, and grandeur,” wrote Hugo Wolf on December 23, 1892 about Anton Bruckner’s Eighth Symphony—a few days after he had heard the premiere of the second version of the work, as performed by the Vienna Philharmonic under Hans Richter. “It was a complete victory of the power of light over darkness. Like an elemental force, the storm of applause burst as each movement came to an end. In short, it was a triumph as beautiful as any Roman emperor might have wished to have.” Franz Welser-Möst, who, like Bruckner, is a native of Upper Austria, will perform this magnificent work with the Cleveland Orchestra. He will celebrate that sense of “mystery” that the composer himself recognized in this music. The musicians from Ohio are sure to provide an unforgettable experience. “They understand me with the slightest of conducting gestures,” says Welser-Möst. “Often all I have to do is raise my eyebrows.”
