“Ein Heldenleben” (“A Hero’s Life”). Tone Poem, Op. 40
With his “Prélude à l’Après-midi d’un Faune” from 1892, Claude Debussy set to music the erotic fantasies of a faun as he dozes under the scorching Sicilian sun—and ushered in the modern era. Debussy characterized the piece as atmospheric mood-painting so as to emphasize his distance from the tone poems of Richard Strauss and their technique of depicting a detailed narrative in music. In “Ein Heldenleben,” the listener encounters love in the form of narcissistic self-love. Numerous quotes from his own musical past support the notion that Strauss wanted to erect a monument to himself here—though with a mischievous wink—as he plays the role of the hero. As a gentle contrast between these extremes, we take a dreamlike journey in “Woven Dreams,” the newest orchestral work of Japanese composer Toshio Hosokawa.
