Alban Berg (1885-1935)
Symphonic Pieces from the Opera “Lulu”
Alban Berg once compared his operatic heroine Lulu to Don Juan. She attracts men the way light attracts moths; she is the personification of libidinal energy, the physical embodiment of the erotic principle: “Lulu, the true, wild, beautiful animal,” as Frank Wedekind called her in his dramatic treatment. Love as it appears in Franz Schubert’s music is less eccentric and cynical, but all the same imbued with deep feeling and informed by the poignancy of the heart. Christine Schäfer, one of the most significant art song interpreters of today, will perform a selection of Schubert lieder. As it turns out, there are many musical connections between these two Austrian composers—as their compatriot, Franz Welser-Möst, explains: “I like to joke that, for me, Alban Berg is the grandson of Franz Schubert. Both share a great romantic soul—and Berg’s music is far from cerebral.”
