Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
Overture No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068

Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
Symphony in B-flat major, Hob. I/98

With early-music master Ton Koopman at the helm, the Concertgebouw Orchestra undertakes a journey back in time into the baroque and classical eras. Goethe was delighted to find himself transported into another world when Bach’s Overture in D major (otherwise known as the Third Orchestral Suite) was played for him. He remarked that it made him imagine “an orderly procession of elegantly dressed people as they descend a great staircase.” Bach wrote this Suite in 1718 for the court orchestra at Cöthen on behalf of one of his aristocratic patrons. Haydn, on the other hand, composed his Symphony No. 98 in B-flat for the emerging middle-class audiences who made up London’s concert life. He delighted his British fans with a slow movement whose theme suggests the tune “God Save the King.” Mozart, in turn, became one of the first freelance composers in music history. It was his piano concertos above all that created a sensation in Vienna. South African soloist Kristian Bezuidenhout, who made his acclaimed Lucerne debut in last fall’s Piano Festival, returns to play the spirited and witty Concerto No. 22 in E-flat (K. 482).
