Cellist David Pia is one of Switzerland’s young “classical” stars. He was born in 1982 in Zug and completed his studies with Clemens Hagen in Salzburg. As the grandson of the conductor Karl Richter, he evidently took in music ever since he was a baby. But Pia really came to the attention of today’s music scene when he was singled out for two awards at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition in 2007. Such conductors as Claudio Abbado, Herbert Blomstedt, and Franz Welser-Möst provided significant inspiration during his time as solo cellist with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra. He has made guest appearances with the Davos Young Artists in Concert, the Ravinia Festival, and Chamber Music Connects the World, a festival held in the Hessian town of Kronberg. In 2007 he performed Vivaldi’s double concertos with the Munich Radio Orchestra, partnering with singer Bobby McFerrin, who vocalized the second cello parts. It’s high time for David Pia’s debut as soloist with the LUCERNE FESTIVAL, where he already wowed audiences in 2008 in a performance of Joachim Schloemer’s “in schnee.”
