Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
Overture to "Genoveva", Op. 81
Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54

Jean Sibelius (1865-1957)
"Lemminkäinen". Four legends, Op. 22

Masculine and feminine love has been equated with unilateral attributes throughout cultural history—as evidenced by this concert. Genoveva, who is wrongfully accused of adultery, would rather lose her life than betray her husband, Siegfried. Such a sacrifice is, however, completely foreign to Lemminkäinen. The Finnish equivalent of Don Juan, he’s a young daredevil and passionate seducer, with little understanding of the women who are his conquests. In his “Four Legends” (Op. 22), Jean Sibelius traces Lemminkäinen’s rise and fall. He behaves mischievously with the Maidens of Saari in the first legend; in the second, he tries to shoot the famous swan of Tuonela but is himself killed, torn to pieces, and tossed into the river of death. The third legend depicts Lemminkäinen in the underworld, where his cries of fear resound. Only his mother can save him by bringing the murdered hero back to life through her magic, making for a grand finale and a breathless musical panorama.
