When a nineteen-year-old from Spain won German radio’s ARD Ramón Ortega Quero, who was born in 1988 in Granada, wowed the jury with his boundless virtuosity, flawless intonation, and sensitivity to stylistic nuance. The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra promptly secured his services and immediately appointed the young musician to principle oboe. Ramón Ortega Quero has meanwhile been developing a wonderful solo career, including, in the last season alone, appearances at the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Zurich Tonhalle, and the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad. He will celebrate his Lucerne debut with a program of baroque music, accompanied not by piano but, in keeping with the era, by harpsichord. InternationalMusic Competition in Munich, it had been 41 years since the last time an oboist claimed first prize.
