“What I really try to do is simply to approach a piece as freshly as I can each time and to convey something that gets under the skin of the listener and leaves a memorable impression,” says Anne-Sophie Mutter in a recent explanation of the secret of her interpretive art. “Of course that always entails a subjective angle on the work, which is inevitably colored by my own life experiences. But I’ve never had room in my life for slickness and superficiality.” In the case of the three Violin Sonatas of Brahms, which she will perform with pianist Lambert Orkis, Mutter will also engage with the composer’s hidden love messages. The 53-year-old Brahms wove into his A major Sonata several song quotes with the unifying refrain, “Come, o come soon.” These words were intended for the young alto Hermine Spies, who, for her part, spoke of her “Johannes Passion.” Rumors of a wedding even began to circulate, but nothing came of them. Brahms remained as he was: a confirmed bachelor.
