Hans Werner Henze (*1926)
"Phaedra". Concert opera in two acts | Co-Production with the Lucerne Theatre
Eros is the strongest force to which humans are subject. So believed the ancient poet Euripides, and he proved that thesis in a tragedy: Hippolytus, the son of King Theseus, lives a chaste life, thus provoking Aphrodite, the goddess of love. She instills in Phaedra a wild passion for Hippolytus, who is her stepson. With with superhuman strength, the Queen struggles against her secret feelings until she is finally driven to confess them. But her beloved reacts with horror, and Phaedra realizes she can save her honor only through death – and through slander, which will destroy Hippolytus. Hans Werner Henze has adapted this powerful work of world literature to the opera stage, providing it with a colorful, sensual, and lyrical score. It’s therefore no wonder that the world premiere of his “Phaedra” at the Berlin Staatsoper in 2007 was enthusiastically received.
