The Modigliani Quartet, a French ensemble, is named after the painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani. It was founded in 2003 by four graduates of the Paris Music Conservatory and has enjoyed a truly meteoric rise, winning first prizes at both the Rimbotti Competition in Florence and the Young Concert Artists Auditions in New York. Their Haydn recording, which appeared in 2008, has received five awards, including the prestigious Grand Prix du Disque. It’s no wonder then that these four young musicians, who studied with the Artemis Quartet and the Ysaÿe Quartet, have admirers and supporters throughout the world. In 2008 the Swiss Foundation loaned the Modigliani Quartet the famous instrumental collection known as “The Evangelists”: two violins, a viola, and a cello. Violin maker Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume crafted each instrument from the wood of the same tree. Ever since, their sound has become even more radiant.
