Maurice Ravel (1875-1937)
“Ma Mère l’Oye” Ballet based on fairy-tales by Charles Perrault

This program revolves around stories of impossible love. Ernest Chausson’s “Poème de l’Amour et de la Mer” deals with loss and transience, while Melisande is prevented from fulfilling her love for Pelleas, her brother-in-law. In 1898 Gabriel Fauré was the first composer to write stage music for Maurice Maeterlinck’s famous drama. Richard Wagner’s affair with Mathilde Wesendonck, the wife of his generous patron, ended abruptly in 1858 with a scandal and the composer’s hasty retreat from Zurich—but not without bequeathing five wonderful songs and the opera “Tristan und Isolde” to posterity. Hope exists only in fairy-tales, as Maurice Ravel shows us in his ballet “Ma Mère l’Oye”: For that is the realm where we find Sleeping Beauty kissed awake from her deathlike slumber, and where a wild beast is transformed into a handsome prince—if only a little affection is shown.
