It’s “Romeo and Juliet” times two. The best-known love story in the world, William Shakespeare’s “most excellent and lamentable tragedy” has inspired many composers to try to capture its essence in music—from Bellini and Berlioz to Boris Blacher. The eminent Brass Ensemble of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA, which has excited audiences with its cleverly conceived programs illustrating the motto for each of the last two summers, has chosen two Russian adaptations. Tchaikovsky musicalizes the tragedy of these “star-crossed lovers” in the form of a “fantasy overture” that is economical, compact, and poignant. In contrast, Prokofiev opts for the large form of a full-length ballet. His score is rich in detail, from the first meeting of these children of two hostile families—citizens of Verona who are caught up in a feud—to their love-death. The musicians, including acclaimed trumpet player Reinhold Friedrich, will perform selections from the score that have been carefully arranged for brass ensemble by Andreas Tarkmann.
