Claudio Abbado and the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA

LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA | Claudio Abbado conductor

Gustav Mahler (1860-1911)
Symphony No. 9 in D major

The Mahler cycle of Claudio Abbado and the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA has long since become legendary. Now they’re nearing the conclusion of their project as they take up the Ninth—the final symphony Mahler was able to complete—which is on the program for this summer. It’s rare to find the kind of critical praise that has been lavished on Abbado’s Mahler interpretations for Lucerne. “If music was heard in the earthly paradise, it could not have sounded more glorious than the performance of Mahler’s Fourth Symphony led by Claudio Abbado,” was Reinhard J. Brembeck’s verdict on last summer’s Mahler concert for the “Süddeutsche Zeitung.” Peter Hagmann was also full of enthusiasm in his review for the “Neue Zürcher Zeitung,” where he wrote: “The Adagio reduced even the reviewer who is seldom at a loss for words to silence: heavenly joys made real and present.”
