Gustav Mahler (1860-1911)
Symphony No. 6 in A minor

“The summer was beautiful, free of conflict, happy,” wrote Alma Mahler about the vacation she spent with her husband Gustav in the summer of 1904. But it was during this period of light-hearted happiness that he composed his gloomiest work, the Sixth Symphony. Initially, Mahler imagined three hammer blows for the finale. Alma later associated these with the three blows of fate that would soon befall Mahler: the death of their daughter Maria, the loss of his position as director of the Vienna Court Opera, and the diagnosis of his heart condition. Pierre Boulez sees Mahler as a figure caught between epochs—a subversive with conservative ambition— and will pair this Symphony with his own work, “Figures–Doubles–Prismes.” This was the first composition Boulez wrote for large orchestra, and he has revised it numerous times since it was premiered in 1958. According to “DIE ZEIT,” at the Donaueschingen Music Festival in 2008, Boulez proved with this work that he remains an avant-garde hero: “You could still hear how Boulez knew all the tricks from the start—and he continues to surprise us with them!”
