Variations for Orchestra, Op. 30
Alexander Scriabin (1872-1915)
"Le Poème de l'Extase", Op. 54
“The nature of creative excitement has all the signs of sexuality,” according to Alexander Scriabin, who considered the state of ecstasy to be the key concept behind his art. “The creative drive brings us into the realm of the ecstatic—outside space and time. Ecstasy is the highest intensification of activity, ecstasy is the summit.” In his “Poem of Ecstasy,” which he wrote between 1904 and 1907, Scriabin develops a thrilling, irresistible process of dramatic intensification, which he implements with the powerful resources of his vastly expanded orchestra. It’s hard to imagine a starker contrast to the orgiastic profusion of Scriabin’s tonal imagination than the strictly constructed works of Anton Webern, where form becomes the goal and everything derives from a basic idea. Dieter Ammann’s new orchestral piece, “Turn,” will reveal toward which of these polar positions he tends.
