“Messages are often secret. Music has this advantage: There are no words, the messages are essentially personal, to be decoded by each however the moment favors.” Pierre Boulez prefaced his “Messagesquisse” with these thoughts in 1977. His title combines the image of a message with that of a sketch. Just what a composer means to express through his compositions is something many musicians would gladly know—yet most are forced to rely on conjecture. For the students of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY, however, the moment has favored a close working relationship with the master himself. They have had the opportunity to engage closely with Boulez in preparing works by him. Perhaps they will succeed in gleaning the message that Boulez has sketched in his music. The program is laid out with multiple perspectives that mirror each other symmetrically. We hear “Messagesquisse” in its original version for cellos and in a later adaptation for violas. Likewise, Boulez’s “Dérive” appears in two different versions.
