Versatility is an asset, as Hélène Grimaud shows. For this piano recital, our “artiste étoile” for Summer 2010 has selected a program to showcase the many facets of her artistry. Alban Berg’s Opus 1 Piano Sonata—a youthful work from his years as a pupil of Arnold Schoenberg—needs to be interpreted with romantic exuberance, while Béla Bartók’s rapidfire “Romanian Folk Dances” require rhythmic furor and an unerring musical temperament. Liszt’s supervirtuosic B minor Sonata is daunting for more than its outrageous technical demands. This labyrinthine work likewise demands an almost mystical concentration in which mind triumphs over matter. But perhaps the greatest challenge comes in the opening piece, Mozart’s A minor Sonata (K. 310). Here Hélène Grimaud illustrates her verve and sensitive fingerwork. To borrow Artur Schnabel’s delightful aphorism, Mozart’s piano pieces are too easy for children and too difficult for adults.
