When Gustav Mahler assumed leadership of the Vienna Philharmonic in 1898, he finally had a cherished opportunity to perform Robert Schumann’s symphonies. Yet Mahler the conductor could hardly suppress the composer within. With the meticulous thoroughness of a painstaking editor, he revised the scores, making what seemed to him sensible improvements. His interventions in the Second Symphony number 355, while his edition of the Fourth involves no fewer than 466 retouchings—with a good deal of the changes involving dynamic markings. Mahler was quite proud of this effort and suggested to his wife Alma that his editions should be published. “They’re worthwhile. Let them be printed.” Yet this legacy was long forgotten. Riccardo Chailly, for whom Schumann is just as important as Mahler, has recorded these versions with the Gewandhaus Orchestra and will now introduce them to the LUCERNE FESTIVAL.
