Commissioned by Pro Helvetia (Marti, Dayer, Wirth) and LUCERNE FESTIVAL
The festival-within-a-festival “(z)eidgenössisCH” kicks off with four new compositions for ensemble. We hear first from the generation of thirty-somethings. However varied the backgrounds of these three composers and their colleagues, they have something in common: All of them began their careers as instrumentalists. Cécile Marti was initially a violinist before undertaking studies with “composer-in-residence” Dieter Ammann in 2004. Rico Gubler, a student of Balz Trümpy and Salvatore Sciarrino, remains in demand as a saxophone player, and Stefan Wirth, who learned the craft of composition at the Britten-Pears-School in Aldeburgh, is an active chamber musician and lieder accompanist. For his part, Xavier Dayer began his career as a classical guitarist but then went on to study at IRCAM in Paris, where he received his education as a composer from Tristan Murail and Brian Ferneyhough.
