Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74 “Pathétique”
Whoever had the fortune to experience the brilliant LUCERNE FESTIVAL debut of the 31-year-old Latvian maestro Andris Nelsons in the summer of 2009 is sure to want to repeat the experience. His return gives you three good reasons to do precisely that: Nelsons will open his program with the prelude to Wagner’s “Lohengrin,” which he will have just conducted in his debut on the Green Hill in Bayreuth. The concert will conclude with Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony, the legendary “Pathétique.” This is music in which Nelsons is thoroughly at home. He conducts it with a feverish intensity and with a fine sense for colorful shadings and nuanced dynamics; he allows Tchaikovsky’s melodies to bloom while keeping the sound of the whole clear. Yet another reason to be excited is the appearance of the multifaceted Austrian percussionist Martin Grubinger, who will perform the Swiss premiere of a new concerto written specifically for him by Israeli composer Avner Dorman. Grubinger is a wizard of percussion who knows how to enchant and entice his audience with rhythmic virtuosity, drive, and charisma.
