“Eugene Onegin.” Lyric scenes based on Pushkin’s novel
Concert performance in Russian language
“All the Wotans, Brünnhildes, Frickas, etc. are so implausible, so completely non-human, that it’s quite difficult to care about their fate,” was Tchaikovsky’s put-down of the figures created by his colleague Richard Wagner. The Russian composer’s own operatic heroes, in contrast, share an entirely different quality. He felt they had to be real humans who endure the conflicts of everyday life. Take Tatyana, a sentimental young girl from the provinces, who falls in love with Eugene Onegin, a jaded playboy from St. Petersburg. She confesses her love via a letter but is rejected and goes on to marry an elderly general. But one day, when she least expects it, her erstwhile heartthrob Onegin resurfaces—only now he’s the one seeking her favor. However, the burnt-out dandy no longer casts a spell over Tatyana: He loses his power at the very moment when he learns to love truly for the first time.
