Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
String Quartet in F minor, Op. 95
String Quartet No. 1, “Geborstener Satz”
String Quartet No. 2, “Distanzenquartett”

Leoš Janáček (1854-1928)
String Quartet No. 1, “The Kreutzer Sonata”

It’s a rarity for a piece of chamber music to reveal a programmatic dimension in its title. But Leoš Janáček clearly reveals the inspiration he found for his First String Quartet in Leo Tolstoy’s novella “The Kreutzer Sonata.” The suspicious Pozdnyshev accuses his wife of having an affair with a violinist and murders her in a fit of jealousy. Passion also abounds in Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 11 in F minor (Op. 95)—but here it’s directed inward and seems virtually to implode. Certainly it was no coincidence that the composer initially insisted that this subjective, confessional work not be performed in public. In the middle of this program by the multiple-award-winning Casal Quartet (which was founded in 1996) are two pieces by “composer-in-residence” Dieter Ammann: his most-recent work, the “Quartet of Distances” (2009), and “Burst,” a movement he wrote in 2003, which the composer characterizes as being “in the shadow of forefathers” such as Béla Bartók and György Ligeti.
