“For years I have devoted myself to lieder, and it is my fondest wish to preserve this art form,” says Thomas Quasthoff. For that reason he founded “Das Lied,” an International Song Competition held in Berlin. “I wanted to support and encourage young singers to find their path.” The competition was inaugurated in February 2009, and the winner was Tobias Berndt. But it wasn’t the first success for this baritone, who was born in Berlin in 1979; he is also the winner of the Brahms and Cantilena Competitions and garnered awards from the Schumann Competition in Graz and Dortmund, the Hugo Wolf Academy in Stuttgart, and the Summer Academy of the Salzburg Mozarteum. Tobias Berndt began his musical career with the famous Dresden Kreuzchor. Ever since he has focused on concert performances, oratorios, and lieder interpretation—just like his mentor, Thomas Quasthoff.
