This year the music world celebrates the bicentennials of Chopin and Schumann, but there’s another anniversary in 2010 which the Berlin Baroque Soloists are commemorating: the 300th anniversary of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, whose “Stabat Mater” is believed to be the last work he was able to complete before dying at 26. Following his death, he acquired mythic stature and was idealized with sentimental enthusiasm. The Romantics compared him to Mozart, and Vincenzo Bellini called him “the angelic maestro.” The stirring “Stabat Mater” will share the program with three composers—each of whom has a Pergolesi connection of his own. Francesco Durante is counted among his likely teachers, while Domenico Gallo became a victim of the Pergolesi cult in the sense that many of his works were falsely ascribed to his peer. Meanwhile, Johann Adolph Hasse, who was born in Hamburg-Bergedorf, emerged as one of the most trendsetting “Italian” composers of the 18th century—alongside Pergolesi.
