New music can always be counted on for surprises: That’s certainly the case with the Swiss new music scene. When, for example, have you heard a Hammond organ in a “classical” concert hall? Michael Wertmüller, who sees himself as a rebel, utopian, and romantic, has written his concerto «Zeitkugel» not only for piano, but also for the organ of the KKL Concert Hall. Although Fritz Hauser is a professional percussion player, his new work “schraffur” calls for a gong to be played in unconventional ways, including scraping and rubbing. Meanwhile, Martin Jaggi has incorporated certain graphics from the city plan of the Nigerian metropolis Lagos into the score of his orchestral work “Moloch,” which received its world premiere in 2009 in Basel. Does Nadir Vassena, a composer from Tessin canton, also find inspiration in the interplay between rampant growth and order? The Basel Sinfonietta will give the answer when it performs the world premiere of her “altri naufragi.”
