“Art itself prevailed,” wrote Peter Hagmann in Die Neue Zürcher Zeitung as he assessed one of Evgeny Kissin’s LUCERNE FESTIVAL piano recitals. “His virtuosity is of course impressive: the naturalness, indeed elegance, with which his fingers fly across the keyboard, the immediately appealing sensuousness, the richly toned, opulent sound,” Hagmann pointed out, admiring Kissin’s remarkable “blend of brilliance and depth.” That the pianist, who was born in1971 in Moscow, is far more than a virtuoso wizard is clear from the program he has chosen to open this year’s Piano Festival. Schubert’s D major Sonata, D 850 calls less for a “lion of the keyboard” than for a knowing interpreter who can bring out the finest shades of feeling, thought, and inner states expressed in this music. Meanwhile, the young Scriabin followed in the wake of Frédéric Chopin, whose scores he tucked beneath his pillow every night …
