Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 56 Scottish

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893)
Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 23

Back to the roots? For his second appearance, Evgeny Kissin will perform the same work with which, 25 years ago, on New Year’s in 1988, he launched his brilliant international career: Tchaikovsky’s famous Piano Concerto in B-flat minor. At the time, he was just 17 years old, performing with the Berlin Philharmonic under Herbert von Karajan. His playing brought not only the aged maestro to tears but also music lovers who were following the broadcast on television around the globe. Kissin himself recalls this as a “mesmerizing” evening, despite Karajan’s extremely slow tempos, which in the case of many another conductor would have seemed like a caricature. But Kissin prefers not to dwell on the past: instead, he points out that often he recalls nothing about how he interpreted a given work in earlier performances. Nor does he listen to his own recordings. Every performance should be new, explains Kissin, “because I, too, have become another person in the time since then.”
