Piano Off-Stage

Wed, 23 November – Sun, 27 November 2011 | Hotels in Lucerne

This, too, is LUCERNE FESTIVAL at the Piano: Piano jazz until late in the night, stormy and swinging, virtuosic and dreamy. Once again this year, in Lucerne’s finest bars and restaurants—in other words, “off stage”—ten internationally acclaimed jazz pianists will celebrate the high art of improvisation and in the process ensure an evocative conclusion to the festival’s evenings.

Italian pianist Rossano Sportiello finds inspiration in the stride piano of a Fats Waller or Art Tatum. Julien Brunetaud, Claude Diallo, and Ehud Asherie represent three aspiring talents we have invited from France, Switzerland, and New York. Also firmly rooted in the New York scene is Japanese pianist Ayako Shirasaki, whom the website “allaboutjazz” recently called “a new jazz star in the making.” Other guest artists include old friends whose previous Off-Stage appearances have been warmly received: Alkis Steriopoulos, a regular on the Broadway scene; the multifaceted Dado Moroni; boogie-woogie king Frank Muschalle; and Chris Hopkins, one of the most sought-after representatives of the young swing generation. If you’d like to assemble your own personal schedule of “Off-Stage” events not to miss, make sure to attend the opening event in the KKL on 22 November, when you can get to know all of this year’s featured artists.
