Over the past season, Evgeny Kissin has allowed himself to take a sabbatical. “I needed time for things which I would otherwise never get to do: for musical studies but also for extramusical interests. The older I get, the more strongly I feel how little time we have and how selective one has to be.” He has also put these free months to use to come to terms with the two great anniversaries which are being celebrated this year, namely, those of Robert Schumann and Frédéric Chopin, both of whom were born two hundred years ago – the former in Zwickau, the latter just outside Warsaw. Kissin’s new program will “dramatize” a summit meeting between these two archromantics. Surely it’s no coincidence that the pianist, a passionate lover of literature who himself also performs as a reciter, has selected works inspired by narrative and poetry: ballades, fantasy pieces, and “novelettes.” After all, one of Schumann’s titles proves an especially lovely and apt description of his playing: “the poet speaks.”
