In the wake of their brilliant Beethoven cycle, which was created exclusively for LUCERNE FESTIVAL during the 2008-09 season, Bernard Haitink and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe are undertaking a retrospective of the next great titan, Johannes Brahms, in a series of seven concerts. The first two evenings will take place as part of the Piano Festival, naturally focussing on the two piano concertos: each will meanwhile be combined with one of the two Serenades, which represent Brahms’s earliest compositions for orchestra. In this way Bernard Haitink will take a look at the workshop of the emerging symphonist as well as lay out the biographical groundwork for what promises to offer an insightful new interpretation of Brahms’s legacy. As an experienced and obsessively detail-oriented musician, Haitink has retained his sense of wonder and curiosity and is never content to rest on his laurels, striving instead for interpretations of unparalleled intensity. Or, to borrow the pithy expression of his colleague Simon Rattle, “He’s simply got it …”
