5 April - 13 April 2014
The 2014 Easter Festival turned out to be a very special one indeed. In a deeply moving memorial concert, LUCERNE FESTIVAL bade farewell to Claudio Abbado and at the same time welcomed Andris Nelsons, who will conduct the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA’s concerts this summer. Nelsons meanwhile demonstrated his credentials as a Wagner specialist with a concert performance of the third act of Parsifal featuring the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, which also invited Gustavo Dudamel to conduct during this year’s Lucerne residency.
In addition, the Festival offered a matinee with the trumpeter Reinhold Friedrich as well as a series of magnificent performances of such masterpieces of sacred music as Rossini’s Petite Messe solennelle (with the Bavarian Radio Choir under Howard Arman), Beethoven’s Missa solemnis (with András Schiff), and Handel’s oratorio Belshazzar and the impressive debut of the young British vocal ensemble Stile antico. Bernard Haitink, who celebrated his 85th birthday this spring, was a highlight as he led the Chamber Orchestra of Europe to launch a new Schumann cycle, which will be continued with programs on 26 and 28 August.
The programming for LUCERNE FESTIVAL at Easter in 2015 will be published at a later date.
