“Leonore Overture” No. 3, Op. 72a

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98

The letter B obviously has a lot of significance in music history. It’s not just the letter with which the names Beethoven, Brahms, and Bartók begin, but also the Bayerischer Rundfunk! Mariss Jansons launches the Easter residency of his Munich-based orchestra with three masterpieces from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Beethoven’s “Leonore” Overture No. 3 proclaims the humanist credo by bearing witness to a faith in freedom and to humanity’s victory over tyranny. Following this comes a confession of love: Béla Bartók’s youthful, fresh First Violin Concerto, which he wrote to portray the violinist Stefi Geyer and his deep feelings for her. The soloist will be the young Norwegian violin virtuoso Vilde Frang, who made her LUCERNE FESTIVAL debut two years ago and who has enjoyed a spectacular international career since. The second half of the program is devoted to a symphonic cornerstone, the Brahms Fourth. This is “abstract” art which is as thrilling as a drama, as poetic as a book of verse, and as lavish as an epic, monunmental painting. It’s hard to believe that Brahms once even believed it was no longer possible to write symphonies after Beethoven….
